  • Spring 2008 Update

    allenarnn April 24th, 2008

Lots of great things continue to happen at Mosaic. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who are supporting our family’s ministry financially and through prayer.

    First, on the family…
Debbie is ready for this year teaching 2nd grade to be complete! The kids are ready for summer as well. Emmaleigh is still playing tennis, Susie is doing ballet, and Alex is swimming. All are doing well, though we are beginning to look at possible different schooling options for the fall at least for the younger two. I continue to work on strengthening our children’s ministry at Mosaic and also on designing improvements to our LifeGroups area.

    Church and ministry highlights

  • We have over half of the $2 million needed to purchase an old K-mart building for renovation as our permanent home!
  • The database which started in children’s ministry has been expanded to the whole church greatly improving communication and efficiency.
  • We recently had a family come back to Mosaic Church because of improvements in our children’s ministry. Yea children’s team!
  • SoulCare
We are currently in a message series called SoulCare about how most of our problems can be worked back to whether Christ or self is on the throne of our lives. This series is a setup to the launching of a center called the SoulCare Center using the same principles to help people with addictions, relational problems, etc. The SoulCare Center will be a free/low-cost center where lay people are involved in guiding those who seek help.

    Leadership Development through LifeGroups
Part of strengthening the health of a church entails developing leaders. Our church leadership has recently been working to define some levels of leadership that span the church no matter which individual ministry one serves in. But, the challenge is how to deliver leadership principles to the different levels. Of course, a first thought is to have “meetings”… oh the joy… right?

I’m excited that we going rather to use the LifeGroup structure as the “delivery system” for the leadership development of our body. Instead of a leadership development “track” or “program” we are going to create a relational culture of leadership development. LifeGroup leaders often miss out on having a LifeGroup of peers. They are leading a group, not living in a group. So, starting this summer each LifeGroup leader (and also leaders across the church in any ministry) will have a next-level, high-powered but relational LifeGroup they can attend to grow in their own discipleship and leadership. We think the impact will be huge as discipleship and leadership principles are grown in our leadership base monthly in LifeGroup fashion and begin to trickle down into our general LifeGroups and our ministries.

    Prayer requests

  • My grandfather, 87, fell recently. Please pray for his quick recovery.
  • Debbie’s mom just had surgery for retinal detachment. Please pray that no further surgery is needed and that there is no loss of eyesight.
  • Please pray for the at-risk 2nd-grader I’m working with on Friday afternoons.  He has so much potential, but he SO needs self-control.  Please pray he’ll have a breakthrough very soon.
  • We have schooling decisions to make for our kids for next year.
  • We are starting the second year of our 2-year “residency” here at Mosaic. We are beginning to think and pray about what is next.
  • Please pray strength for Debbie as she finishes the school year in her very difficult school.
  • Good things are happening!

    allenarnn February 18th, 2008

Just wanted to give a quick update on our ministry at Mosaic Church. Things are really beginning to click in children’s ministry! I’m so excited to have our leaders really beginning to operate in their passion and giftedness. One of our leaders totally led our mid-year training late Jan and early Feb. Based on evaluations, it was received by the participants as one of the best MoKids training meetings ever. Another leader is overhauling our Mokids (are really whole church) database. Awesome. Another leader is creating a time before Sunday morning worship each week where all children’s volunteers can gather for snacks and a quick hit of vision, information and prayer before they head into work with the kids. I could point to several more people just doing awesome jobs in their gifting.

Please be praying for us as we continue to improve our children’s ministry so that more and more kids can truly get a glimpse of our magnificent God and become worshippers.

Thanks for your support and prayers!!!!!

    Christmas Update to Support Team

    allenarnn December 29th, 2007

    Dear ministry supporters,

Wow! What a big year this has been for Mosaic Church of Central Arkansas and for our family. Thank you all so very much for your financial gifts and prayer support this year.

    OUR MINISTRY
Personally, I had two goals for this year. One goal was to learn about multi-ethnic ministry so that I can more effectively lead and minister in multi-ethnic churches. The other goal was that God would use me to help bring health and strength to whatever areas of ministry He placed onto my plate. Both of these goals have been and continue to be realized in big ways.

On the first goal… what a learning experience this year has been! It’s a much harder work than I ever imagined to help diverse people thrive together in unity in the church. It is the work of God, not man. Not only are racial differences a part of these trials, but also generational, economic, technological, educational, and family cultural differences. It’s intensely difficult but at the same time beautiful to do the hard work of understanding where others are coming from. It’s doesn’t always work out nice and tidy. Sometimes it’s a mess. But we keep working and praying. We stay committed to each other and to the vision of seeing a heavenly throng of diverse worshippers together here on earth in the local church.

My second hope was that God would use me to build the health and strength of some ministry areas. By God’s grace and power, I believe that we’ve seen strengthening in several areas:

    • Provided infrastructure for our transition in September to two worship services
    • Led a team in mobilizing LifeGroups for the 07/08 ministry year. I introduced a new component to LifeGroups to ensure that while LifeGroups are studying typical LifeGroup material on specialized topics like parenting, marriage, finances, etc they are also experiencing coaching (discipleship) on the basic building blocks of a great life with Christ (things like prayer, time with God, memorizing Scripture, evangelism, etc). Plans are being made for further LifeGroup ministry strengthening in the new year.
    • In October, I also took on a role developing the operations of our children’s ministry. I never thought I’d be reviewing preschool curriculum or buying a yard of felt at the fabric counter at Walmart as a blanket for baby Jesus! I like to dive in deep to learn what’s going on in an organization and then pull way up to work on the structure of the organization. So far, I’ve implemented a resource arm to stabilize the flow of printed material and supplies to the teachers. Also, we have almost completed a reorganization of the children’s leaders. Instead of leaders just coordinating efforts for an age group of children under them, we are unleashing these leaders to serve in their giftedness and passion for the benefit of the entire children’s ministry. The first big “win” will be in late January when our newly unleashed “training” leader will create and coordinate an awesome training event for all MoKids volunteers.

    CHURCH HIGHLIGHTS
    • By the end of January we’ll have (in cash) about half of the money needed to buy the old K-mart across the street as our permanent home, a “Center of Life” in this community.
    • During late summer and early fall we saw over 60 people put their faith in Jesus through our ministries both here and overseas.
    • On Sunday mornings for several months we’ve been digging into the book of 1 Peter. Try memorizing 1 Peter 1:3-9 and use it to encourage your loved ones. Powerful stuff!
    • On Thanksgiving Day we fed turkey and dressing to over 350 people from the community. One previously homeless guy whom I know was there. He was excited to tell me that “he found a place”. He had walked 3 hours from his new home to attend Mosaic’s Thanksgiving meal. He went home with a full stomach and bags full of clothes from the clothes closet.

    SUPPORT-RAISING
In order to keep you informed of our support-raising status, I’d like to share with you how our family is currently operating financially:

The design currently is as follows:
    • 50% of my time is covered by supporters
    • 25% of my time is paid now by Mosaic Church
    • 25% of my time is spent on freelance video projects

My wife, Debbie, has returned to work this fall as a teacher in order to provide good group health insurance and also to work on paying off debt incurred prior to moving to Arkansas. She is teaching 2nd grade in a very at-risk public school, and she’s learning much herself about interaction with diverse people.

Well… That about wraps it up! Thanks for reading and for caring about us. Thanks again for your generous support and for your friendship. You should receive in January a statement of giving for your records. As we enter our second year of this two-year “residency” we’ll continue to thrive via your support and your prayers. Remember that online giving is available. Simply visit www.mosaicchurch.net, and click on “donations” at the bottom of the page. Once in the online giving system, use the “auto-tithe” tab and choose “Allen Arnn support team”. Please contact me if you have questions.

If you’d like to pray specifically for us, please consider these prayer requests:

Allen – For wisdom to juggle several professional activities at once. For increased passion and commitment among the people I lead. For the MoKids training in January to be a huge boost of energy and excellence in the ministry. For me to keep the right balance between work and being a father and husband.

Debbie – For strength and patience as she continues to grow as a teacher.

Emmaleigh – Big praise! Em has been experiencing stress this year from several causes. Lately, I believe God has been working in her and helping her to cope. Please pray she continues to grow in her dependence on Jesus.

Alex – Please pray he can be diligent to work on his vision therapy and that he’ll desire to grow closer to Jesus.

Susannah – Please pray that as our youngest she won’t be neglected or feel neglected as our family gets increasingly busy.

We pray God’s richest blessings on you and yours in the new year.

Multi-ethnic Church Article in NY Times

    allenarnn September 24th, 2007

Check out the following article from the front page of the New York Times on Saturday. Our church in Little Rock is mentioned. There is also a good video on this page about a church going multi-ethnic.

    Article

    Long time no post

    allenarnn August 27th, 2007

Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve posted here. We’ve been crazy busy, but great stuff is happening. You can also follow my personal blog which I also update when I have time.
    At Mosaic:

We go to 2 services on Sept 9. Everything is just about ready. I’m very pleased at the percentage of the congregation that have completed a form to help us understand their plans for worship attendance, serving, and LifeGroup attendance in the new 2-service plan. It looks like each of the two services will be attended fairly evenly. This will be great for the energy of the service and it will leave room for growth in both hours.

A great team is forming to lead the LifeGroup ministry for the fall. With me as a developer and others as designers and manager we make a well rounded team. We’ll be hosting two LifeGroup leader training sessions the second week of September. LifeGroups kick back up for the fall the third week of September.

    Family:

Debbie started teaching at a public elementary school last week. As with any new job, there were ups and downs. But, I think she is going to love it and make a big impact.

The kids started back to school too. Doing great.

    More soon…

    Gotta run……..

    Forum on Culture

    allenarnn June 14th, 2007

This week was the second of three forums this summer co-facilitated by Mosaic’s pastor Mark DeYmaz. The first was on “race”; this one was on “culture”. It was very good, and I was, once again, thrilled with how Mosaic is active and leading out in the community. The panel included an Egyptian born marketing professional, an Indian peditrician, an African-American optometrist, and a Cajun-American sociology professor.
A few highlights from the presentations and discussion:
    -Organizations must:

    1) Value diversity - diversity can either be an irritation or a creative inspiration
    2) Build capacity and discipline for regular cultural self-assessment

    3) Learn to validate cultures by institutionalizing cultural knowledge. Put more holidays on your company calendar than just YOUR holidays, etc.

    4) Develop adaptations in how to do business with culture in mind

    - The world doesn’t need to be color blind or we’ll lose the beauty in the world being colorful.

    - More thought required… but interesting…. Cultural clashes are about competition. It goes like this… our way of life is the best, we’d rather take you out than risk having you take away our way of life, we want to make you subscribe to our way of life. What if we had a new economics of cooperation instead of competition? At first, that is hard to imagine. But then you look at the computer industry and see it happening. Open source programs… linux… wordpress…other freeware, shareware. User generated news.

    .
The third forum of the summer will be on “faith” and it will be held at Mosaic on August 14 at 6:30pm.

    Healthy Things Grow

    allenarnn May 18th, 2007

We all know that healthy things grow. And, that’s not only true for organisms but for organizations.

When one talks about a church needing to be healthy to grow, it would be easy just to look at abstract things. Are the relationships healthy? Is there a positive feeling in the place? Do the people understand the mission and values?

These things are all very important, but my work in the church focuses on another aspect of health. Physical and organizational health.

    Think about the human being.

Imagine what would happen if somehow a person had great relationships, great emotional health, understood his or her reason for being, but did not have any infrastructure.

The process for using oxygen from the air.
    The process for digesting food.
The thousands of systems and processes on the cellular level.

What if some of these were not functioning optimally or if they were still ideas in need of implementation?

Just as a human body needs optimized infrastructure, systems, and processes in order to thrive, so the church needs these things to thrive as well.

Strategizing how to leverage one team’s expertise across the entire organization.
Designing a system to collect furniture for families in need after a hurricane.
Building a process and organization for optimal guest experience on Sunday mornings.

These are the kinds of things I love to do. My purpose is to enable people and organizations to create and deliver excellence. I am so excited to help Mosaic church with its infrastructure, systems, and processes so that it can be more healthy and truly thrive.

Forum on race in Little Rock

    allenarnn May 9th, 2007

Last night I attended an outstanding forum on race here in Little Rock.

Here were a few of the nuggets from the conversation:

    – We must be deliberate not to move apart from each other as a society. Think schools, churches, housing options, business deals.

–We are more the same than we are different.

–If we want to make a difference, we can’t just have private compassion. We must have public action.

–Soft power is a better change agent than hard power:
::::::hard power is getting people to do what you want
::::::soft power is getting people to want what you want

TV and movies perpetuate racism in innocent children who might not otherwise discover it

–”1957 is still palpable in Little Rock” - civil rights and Little Rock Nine historian

–Realtors can do a lot to help stop the segregating of neighborhoods, “white flight”, etc. Realtor’s suggestions to buyers are powerful - they can nudge society to come together instead of drift apart.

–70% of African-American children are born out of wedlock. We have got to step up and start taking care of children who are not our own.

–Lastly, there’s the topic of “authentic blackness” and “authentic whiteness” and how it impacts choices and behaviors. This is something I’ll have to think a lot more about. Maybe in another post…

    Wow

    allenarnn April 3rd, 2007

Sunday at Mosaic was awesome. The message was about how we’ve really only waded out ankle deep in the love Christ has for us and in the love that is possible in the body of the church. The love of Christ is an ocean to swim in!! A story was shared with great authenticity about two of the staff members who, through hard conversation and spiritual revelation, are mending their relational and racial differences. Powerful.
